We welcome Alpha Primary School to the Listen Project

We are proud that Alpha Primary School has adopted the Libbo Foundation’s schools’ book initiative, The Listen Project—a platform that gives voice to the stories of our learners and their lived experiences.

Located in Bell Road, Gelvandale, in the Northern Mandela Metropole, Alpha opened its doors in 1961 and has stood as a beacon of education and community for over six decades. Its founding principal, the late Mr. T. Mackay, led the school for an impressive 29 years.

Alpha Primary is a no-fee institution serving a sub-economic community. Many learners face difficult circumstances, yet their resilience is extraordinary. The dedicated staff work tirelessly to deliver high-quality education, while the school offers a rich array of opportunities—both academic and extracurricular. Sports remain an integral part of the learners’ development, with rugby, soccer, cricket, athletics, netball, chess, cross-country, mini-cricket, and March & Drill all thriving at Alpha. In recent years, the school has introduced a coding and robotics club, sparking excitement and inspiring a new generation of innovators.

Its cultural and intellectual activities include a school choir, GrowSmart Literacy and Mathematics competitions, Spelling Bee challenges, and WOW (Woorde Open Wêrelde), all of which provide learners with platforms to excel.

The Listen book, is part of The Listen Project, that captures the day-to-day realities of our learners—their struggles, triumphs, and dreams. Despite the challenges many of them face, these stories testify to their courage, determination, and ability to succeed. Our hope is that readers will not only appreciate these stories but also find inspiration in them—measuring their own challenges against these narratives and discovering, as the learners have, that success can take many forms.
